Letter: Loophole for Goose Rocks? (Printed April 16, 2010)

To the editor:

Let’s zap the idea of Kennebunkport spending hundreds of thousands of dollars of taxpayer money on an absolutely unnecessary lawsuit. Let’s zap the seagulls instead.

The 1647 Colonial ordinance defended the right of Maine (and Massachusetts) citizens to use the intertidal zone for fishing, fowling and navigating. Instead of providing attorneys with our hard earned money, we need only obey the law.

For less than one tenth of one percent of the projected legal fees, the town can provide every beachgoer with the means of fowling. It’s simple; we can just issue inexpensive water pistols for zapping seagulls. The beauty of this idea is that the downed birds can be given to any poor person in need of food.

I volunteer to spend at least half-a-day this summer distributing the weapons and collecting a small security deposit. I’m sure that many other residents would gladly do the same.
