Letter: Board sets low bar (Printed April 30, 2010)
How do we determine when a high school is performing at an excellent level?
Is it based on a comparison to other high schools in the state, or is it based on meeting, or exceeding, measurable goals? In Maine 60 percent of our students entering college must take remedial courses in order to compete at this level. Is this the standard we are holding ourselves to?
A great high school is one that serves all its students well, not just those that are college bound, again 45 percent of our students either fail to meet state standards, or only partially meet them. The school board, in their response (Letters, April 23, page 9), failed to address this.
A great high school must be able to produce measurable academic outcomes to show the school is successfully educating its student body, across a range of performance indicators. The school board used words, only, to defend its assessment of the school, what were the proficiency standards used, and how do we measure up to them?
