Letter: Postal workers help hungry (Printed May 14, 2010)

To the editor:

On Saturday, May 8, the National Association of Letter Carriers conducted its annual “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive.

During mail delivery, postal carriers collected food donated by local residents and delivered it to Church Community Outreach Services, Inc., the food pantry that serves Kennebunk, Kennebunkport and Arundel. This year they collected 3,034 pounds of food.

On behalf of the Church Community Outreach Services, Inc., board of directors I would like to thank all people involved in this very successful food drive. Thank you to the residents of Kennebunk for your generosity. Thank you to the dedicated mail carriers who collected and then delivered the food.

Thank you to the Knights of Columbus, teenagers and older volunteers for receiving, weighing, sorting and shelving the donated food. And a special thank you to the Kennebunk postmaster who organized the food drive and encouraged his staff’s participation.

The Church Community Outreach Services, Inc. board of directors of the  is comprised of volunteers representing 11 churches in the area. Our primary purpose is to serve emergency food needs and provide temporary fuel assistance to individuals and families in Arundel, Kennebunk and Kennebunkport.

Without the support of the people of these communities, we would not be able to fulfill our purpose and we deeply appreciate their continued generosity over the years.

Beth Jones

Chairman, Church Community Outreach Services, Inc.
