Letter: Kennebunk community garden is up and running (Printed May 28, 2010)
On behalf of the Kennebunk Community Garden Committee, I am pleased to announce Kiuna Kennebunk Community Garden, located at the end of Holland Road in West Kennebunk, officially opened May 22.
Nearly 25 volunteers spent more than 40 hours weeding the plant-a-row-for-the-hungry section, which is now ready for planting.
Last year we raised 500 pounds of produce. This year, we not only want to raise more, but we’re also looking to plant a wider selection of vegetables. We are seeking donations of vegetable seedlings and seeds for this important part of our activities. If you can donate, please contact me at 251-6283 or e-mail info@kennebunkcommunitygarden.org.
We’d also like to extend our thanks to many others who are helping us improve our garden. With the support of two high school student groups, the town, Deering Lumber and Animal Welfare Society, we have installed a permanent fence, added lime and compost to amend the soil and are looking forward to the completion of a beautiful new tool shed.
We have added permanent plots, which renters can keep from one season to the next, allowing them to plant perennials and add their own personal touch. Of course, we will continue to have seasonal plots. Both types of plots are still available.
For information on renting a plot, stop by Kennebunk Town Hall during regular business hours.
A big thanks to everyone who has joined with us to create our beautiful Kiuna Community Garden. This truly is our community garden – created for the community, by the community.
Bevan Davies
Director, Kennebunk Community Garden Committee
