Letter: Offer respect to our flag and veterans (Printed June 25, 2010)
During the Kennebunk parades on both May Day and Memorial Day, I noted with sadness that the majority of the assembled crowd failed to show proper respect for the color guard, and the American flag.
Here’s a heartfelt reminder. I respectfully hope that parents and other adults will take notice and set a good example for our young citizens.
When the color guard and American flag passes by, tradition says that for non-veterans, you take off your hat, hold your right hand over your heart, and show silent respect until the guard and flag have passed.
The veterans in the color guard have served active combat time and risked their very lives for your right to enjoy a peaceful, safe holiday. As for the flag, it’s our nation’s most important symbol, and it deserves proper respect – from everyone – young and old.
I would entreat Kennebunk residents to observe proper tradition, and please ask the same from your children and other young people in the audience. To do so only takes a moment and it’s important.
American traditions such as these help weave the very fabric that constitutes our country. That’s why it’s important that these traditions are observed.
It’s really easy. When you see the flag, and the color guard approaching, just take off the hat, shut off the cell phone, put your right hand over your heart, and observe a moment of silence as the flag passes by.
Please - remember the proper American flag etiquette during parades, and any event involving a color guard. Honor your nation and make sure your children know the tradition, as well. American war veterans, and the American flag, deserve your respect.
