Letter: Neighbors helped us (Printed July 30, 2010)

To the editor:

When my wife, Dorothy, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, she just screamed, “No! Don’t ever say that again.” Being a registered nurse she knew what we were facing. One day riding in the car she was softly praying: “Lord, something is happening to me. I’m so afraid. Please help me.” And then sang “God Will Take Care Of Me.”

In restaurants, hospitals, stores, at the beach and wherever we were, people from the communities have been there for us. How many times were Kennebunk police called to help find her? You were so gentle and kind and she felt safe. The ambulance calls were always answered by such caring persons, helping Dorothy and counseling me.

The Kennebunk Baptist Church members and friends, where I still serve as pastor, were there to help and care and pray. Some very special people showed they were her dear friends and helped cope with situations that were very difficult.

As Dorothy is now in the hands of professionals, who are unbelievably caring, I just want to express my appreciation and say how thankful I am for you from our southern Maine communities.
