Citing “economic considerations” Arundel Selectman Byron Kindley resigned his seat Monday.
Kindley, 63, is under investigation for allegedly receiving stolen goods and trafficking Vicodin out of his Route 111 Valero Gas station. The gas station has been closed since the end of June.
The York County Sheriff’s office is conducting the investigation.
In an email from Kindley to Town Manager John Fraser, Kindley said: “Due to economic considerations I find I must relocate from Arundel which makes me ineligible to serve as selectman. I therefore submit my resignation as of today. It has been my honor to serve the citizens of Arundel.”
Kindley could not be reached for comment.
Kindley has served on the board since 2008. After his arrest on June 11, some Arundel residents circulated a petition to collect signatures recalling Kindley and two other Arundel selectman, Dana Peck and Mark Paulin. The recall petition was never submitted into the town office.
Peck was re-elected to his seat June 8, garnering one less vote than Velma Jones Hayes, also an incumbent. Peck and Hayes were the only names on the ballot for two seats.
Nomination papers are now available at town hall for Kindley’s seat, which expires in June 2012.
Papers must be returned to the town clerk’s office no later than 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 20 to appear on Nov. 2 ballot for the regular election.
